Olive green pictorial cover. Pictorial endpapers. Color frontispiece by F. H. Lungren. Illustrated throughout in black and white, some full-page. Wide Awake was one of the most important juvenile books published by Daniel Lothrop. It was designed for older children. In it appeared poems, stories, and articles of general interest written by men and women who have taken high rank in the literature of the country. Louise Imogen Guiney, Hezekiah Butterworth, Mary E. Wilkins, Celia Thaxter, Edward Everett Hale and Margaret Sidney (Lothrop's wife) are only a few of the authors who contributed to the magazine and who appear in this volume. In compiling these collections, Lothrop believed in employing the best illustrators as well. This volume includes illustrations by Childe Hassam, F. H. Lungren and Mary Hartwell Catherwood and many, many others.
